چکیده

The marine red alga Laurencia brandenii collected from the southwest coast of India (Indian Ocean) was extracted and fractioned using column chromatography. The individual fractions were evaluated in vitro via antimicrobial activity against six species of Microbial Type Culture Collection and three species of clinical human pathogens, antipest activity on Sitophilus oryzae, maggoticidal activity against 2nd instar larvae of Sarcophaga sp. and termiticidal activity againstMicrotermes obesi. It was found that the fraction eluted using petroleum ether:chloroform (6:4) exhibited broader biological activities. The phyco-constituents of the active fraction were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. The GC-MS profile of the active fraction revealed that the main constituent was octadecadienoic acid (49.75%) followed by n-hexadecanoic acid (14.24%), which might have a functional role in the biological activities. The overall activity profile envisages that these bioactive compounds from L. brandenii could be utilized as a renewable natural resource for the development of novel environmental-compatible formulations for the control of human pathogens, pests, termites and maggots.

New Polyether Triterpenoids from Laurencia viridis and Their Biological Evaluation

The red seaweed Laurencia viridis is a rich source of secondary metabolites derived from squalene. New polyethers, such as iubol (2), 22-hydroxy-15(28)- dehydrovenustatriol (3), 1,2-dehydropseudodehydrothyrsiferol (4), and secodehydrothyrsiferol (5) have been isolated and characterized from this alga. The structures were determined through the interpretation of NMR spectroscopic data and the re...

Isolaurenidificin and Bromlaurenidificin, Two New C15-Acetogenins from the Red Alga Laurencia obtusa.

Chromatographic fractionation of the CH₂Cl₂/MeOH extract of the Red Sea red alga Laurencia obtusa gave two new hexahydrofuro[3,2-b]furan-based C15-acetogenins, namely, isolaurenidificin (1) and bromlaurenidificin (2). The chemical structures were elucidated based on extensive analyses of their spectral data. Compounds 1 and 2 showed no toxicity (LC50 > 12 mM) using Artemia salina as test organi...

Antifouling Potentials of Seaweeds Collected from the Southwest Coast of India

In the present study, a total of ten seaweed species collected from the Kollam coast (Indian ocean) were subjected to antifouling assays against the common fouling organisms such as Balanus amphitrite, Mytilus edulis and three biofilm forming bacteria, Vibrio sp., Colwellia sp. SW125 and Pseudoalteromonas sp. SW124. Of all the seaweeds tested, only one species, the red algae, Laurencia brandeni...

Sesquiterpene and Acetogenin Derivatives from the Marine Red Alga Laurencia okamurai

In addition to 13 known compounds, four new bisabolane sesquiterpenes, okamurenes A-D (1-4), a new chamigrane derivative, okamurene E (5), and a new C₁₂-acetogenin, okamuragenin (6), were isolated from the marine red alga Laurencia okamurai. The structures of these compounds were determined through detailed spectroscopic analyses. Of these, okamurenes A and B (1 and 2) are the first examples of...

cDNA cloning and characterization of vanadium-dependent bromoperoxidases from the red alga Laurencia nipponica.

The marine red alga genus Laurencia is one of the richest producers of unique brominated compounds in the marine environment. The cDNAs for two Laurencia nipponica vanadium-dependent bromoperoxidases (LnVBPO1 and LnVBPO2) were cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. Enzyme assays of recombinant LnVBPO1 and LnVBPO2 using monochlorodimedone revealed that they were thermolabile but their Km valu...
